Strumica is the largest city in southeastern North Macedonia and the country's ninth most populous overall, situated near the Novo Selo-Petrich border crossing with Bulgaria and close to the Greek border. It is named for the Strumica River, a tributary of the Struma, which runs through it and gives its name to the surrounding municipality. As of 2021 the city proper had 33,825 inhabitants, with roughly 49,995 in its wider metropolitan area.
