FAQs
How did Bhopal get its name?
Its name is explained by competing theories tied to King Bhoja or a king called Bhupala.
No single account is settled. Folklore says Bhopal was founded in the 11th century by the Paramara king Bhoja, and one theory holds that it was first called Bhojpal after a dam (pal) built by the king's minister. An alternative theory says the city is named after another king called Bhupala, also given as Bhupal.
