Symi is a mountainous Greek island and municipality in the Dodecanese island group of the South Aegean region, about fifteen miles north of Rhodes. Its main settlement is the harbour town of Symi, together with the adjoining upper town of Ano Symi and several smaller population centers. The island's permanent population was 2,603 at the 2021 census, though it grows to around 6,000 during the tourist season. Symi was historically known for shipbuilding and sponge fishing and today depends primarily on tourism.
