Szazhalombatta

Szazhalombatta is a town in Pest County, Hungary, with a 2024 population of 17,971 spread across 28.06 square kilometers. Its Hungarian name means one hundred tumuli, after a field of ancient burial mounds at the edge of the town. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic, roughly four thousand years ago, and during the Bronze Age its inhabitants built an earthwork fortification defended by the nearby Danube River and the surrounding valley; the resulting tell settlement, now called Szazhalombatta-Foldvar, contains archaeological layers up to six meters deep. The town is also known for a church designed by the architect Imre Makovecz, and it was named one of Hungary's most flowery settlements in 2011. It has railway connections to Budapest and eastern Hungary, with bus service to the capital taking about 45 minutes.
