Szczebrzeszyn is a town in the Lublin Voivodeship of southeastern Poland, about 20 kilometers west of Zamosc, with 5,357 inhabitants at the 2004 census. Documented from 1352 under King Casimir III and a significant trading center by 1492, it is known as the Capital City of the Polish Language for a tongue-twisting local saying notoriously hard for non-native speakers to pronounce; during the Second World War, between 3,000 and 4,000 Jews lived there when Germany occupied the town in 1939, and more than 5,500 were transported to extermination camps between May and November 1942.
