Szczecin

Szczecin, historically known in English as Stettin, is the capital and largest city of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in northwestern Poland, near the Baltic Sea and the German border, with a December 2021 population of about 395,513 making it Poland's seventh-largest city. Founded as a West Slavic stronghold in the 8th century, it became capital of the Duchy of Pomerania under the House of Griffin before Swedish and then Prussian rule; after the Second World War it returned to Poland under the Potsdam Agreement, and the first agreement between striking workers and Poland's communist government was signed there on 30 August 1980, giving rise to the Solidarity movement.
