Szentendre is a riverside town in Pest County, Hungary, between Budapest and the Pilis-Visegrad Mountains, with a population of about 27,500 in 2021. Depopulated during the Ottoman period, it was resettled afterward by Serb and other foreign migrants whose influence shaped the town baroque architecture and multicultural character. It gained city status in 1872 and a rail link to Budapest in 1888, and since the early 20th century it has been an artists colony and a popular day trip destination for visitors staying in Budapest.
