Szombathely is a city in Hungary with about 78,000 inhabitants, making it the country's tenth most populous city, and serves as the administrative centre of Vas County in the west of the country near the Austrian border. It lies along the streams Perint and Gyongyos, where the Alpokalja, or Lower Alps, meet the Little Hungarian Plain, and as the oldest city in Hungary it is known as the birthplace of Saint Martin of Tours.
