Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi province, China, and the province's political, economic, cultural and international exchange center. Built around an industrial base focused on energy and heavy chemicals, particularly coal, Taiyuan has a long history stretching back over two thousand years and today mixes ancient temples and city walls with a modern industrial economy tied closely to Shanxi's coal reserves.
