Taoyuan is a special municipality in northwestern Taiwan, bordered by New Taipei City to the northeast, Yilan County to the southeast, and Hsinchu County to the southwest. Formerly a county, it became one of Taiwan's newest special municipalities in 2014 and today ranks as the island's fourth-largest metropolitan area and fifth-largest city by population. Its core urban districts, Taoyuan District and Zhongli District, evolved from a satellite community of Taipei into a major urban center in their own right. The city's name, meaning peach garden in Chinese, reflects the historical abundance of peach trees in the area.
