Taraz is a city and the administrative center of Jambyl Region in Kazakhstan, located on the Talas River in the south of the country near the border with Kyrgyzstan. Its population was 330,100 at the 1999 census, up 9 percent from 1989 and one of the fastest-growing in the country after Astana and Turkistan, and had grown to 428,000 by the current count.
