Tartagal is a tropical city in the province of Salta in northern Argentina, capital of the General José de San Martín Department. It sits in the Yungas jungle with the sub-Andean mountains to its west and the Salta plains to its east, its streets and squares dense with mangoes, algarrobos and lapachos, and eight indigenous communities live within its territory. The surrounding area is one of the few places in the world where the green macaw survives in the wild.
