Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia, after the capital Tallinn, with a population of roughly 97,000. It lies on the Emajõgi river, which connects Lake Võrtsjärv and Lake Peipus, the two largest lakes in the country, about 186 kilometers southeast of Tallinn. From the 13th century until the end of the 19th century the city was widely known by variants of its historical name, Dorpat.
