Tartus is a major port city on the Mediterranean coast of Syria, the second largest port city in the country after Latakia, and the largest city in Tartus Governorate, which it was governed under Latakia Governorate until becoming a separate governorate in the 1970s. Its population was estimated at 458,327 in 2023, and in summer it serves as a vacation spot for many Syrians.
