Tarutung is a district and town on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, serving as the administrative capital of North Tapanuli Regency in North Sumatra province. Its name comes from the Batak-language word for durian, after the durian trees that once grew in the area and gave the town its name. As of 2024 the town had a recorded population of 44,523.
