Tatabanya is a city with county rights and the capital of Komarom-Esztergom County in the Central Transdanubia region of northwestern Hungary, about 55 kilometers from Budapest, occupying a valley between the Gerecse and Vertes hills. It grew out of coal mining operations and was formally established by uniting four villages on October 1, 1947, and today serves as an important railway and road junction on the M1 motorway. Its 2022 population was 64,305, the 12th largest in Hungary.
