Tauranga is a coastal city in the Bay of Plenty Region of New Zealand's North Island, whose Maori name means resting place or anchorage; it was constituted as a city on April 17, 1963, following Maori settlement from the 13th century and European colonization in the early 19th century. It is New Zealand's fifth-most populous urban area and its fastest-growing city, home to the Port of Tauranga, described as New Zealand's largest port by gross export tonnage, and a major horticultural center for kiwifruit and avocados. Its population was about 161,000 in June 2025.
