Texcoco de Mora is a city in the State of Mexico, 25 kilometres northeast of Mexico City, and the municipal seat of the municipality of Texcoco. In the pre-Hispanic era it was a major Aztec city on the shores of Lake Texcoco. After the Conquest it was initially the second most important city in the region after Mexico City, but its importance faded over time and it became more rural in character. Through the colonial and post-independence periods most of Lake Texcoco was drained, so the city is no longer on the shore and much of the municipality lies on the old lakebed. Numerous Aztec archaeological finds have been made here, including the 125 tonne stone statue of Chalchiuhtlicue found near San Miguel Coatlinchan, now in the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
