Thane is a metropolitan city in Maharashtra, India, on Salsette Island neighboring Mumbai and part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Its population was about 1.89 million at the 2011 census, rising to an estimated 2.5 million by 2023, making it one of India's most populous cities. Thane, known as Thana until 1996, was the terminus of Asia's first passenger railway, a 34-kilometer line from Bombay opened on April 16, 1853.
