The capital and largest city of the Greek administrative region of Central Macedonia and the second-largest city in Greece, the largest in Northern Greece, with over 300,000 residents in the city proper and slightly over one million across its metropolitan area. Its historical status as a co-reigning capital of the Byzantine Empire alongside Constantinople gave it the Greek nickname Symprotevousa, meaning the co-capital.
