Thurning

Northern Europe

Thurning is a village and civil parish in the English county of Northamptonshire, in the north-east of the county about 5.5 miles south-east of Oundle. It forms part of the civil parish of Hemington, Luddington and Thurning. Until 1888 the ecclesiastical parish was partly in Northamptonshire and partly in Huntingdonshire, with its parish church in the latter county. The 2001 census recorded 93 people in Thurning civil parish, and in 2011 the village remained under 100. The village name probably means place with thorn trees. The Grade II listed church of St James dates from the 12th century and was restored in 1880, and the stained-glass artist Christopher Whall was born in the village.
