Tilsit, known since the Soviet period as Sovetsk, is a town in Kaliningrad Oblast, the Russian exclave on the Baltic, standing on the south bank of the Neman River, which here forms the border with Lithuania. The settlement developed around a castle of the Teutonic Knights called the Schalauer Haus, founded in 1288, and it was granted municipal rights in 1552. It is regarded as the traditional capital of the region of Lithuania Minor, and its past is told in several languages: German Tilsit, Lithuanian Tilžė, Polish Tylża and Russian Sovetsk. Two treaties were concluded here that mattered greatly in the histories of France, Poland, Lithuania, Germany and Russia, and the town is the place of origin of Tilsit cheese. With 38,614 inhabitants as of 2023 it is the second largest city of the oblast.
