Timaru is a port city in the southern Canterbury region of New Zealand South Island, about 157 kilometers southwest of Christchurch and 196 kilometers northeast of Dunedin on the eastern Pacific coast. Its urban area has about 29,300 residents, the largest in South Canterbury and the third largest in the Canterbury region overall. The city is a major cargo port and the second largest fishing port in New Zealand. Its rolling hills, formed from lava flows of the extinct Mount Horrible volcano, give its main streets an undulating character unlike the flat Canterbury Plains to the north.
