Tiruchirappalli

Tiruchirappalli, also called Trichy, is a city in Tamil Nadu, India, positioned near the state's geographic center about 322 kilometers south of Chennai, with 916,857 residents in the city proper and 1,022,518 in its metropolitan area at the 2011 census, the fourth largest urban agglomeration in Tamil Nadu. One of India's longest continuously documented settlements, tracing to the Sangam period and including the ancient Chola capital of Uraiyur as a present day neighborhood, it played a pivotal role in the Carnatic Wars between British and French forces from 1746 to 1763, later became renowned for its exported Trichinopoly cigar, and today houses the Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam along with major institutions including NIT-Tiruchirappalli.
