Tondano is the capital of Minahasa Regency in North Sulawesi province, Indonesia, in the highlands on the shore of Lake Tondano about 35 kilometers south of Manado. Its name comes from the Minahasan toulour, meaning water people, and it is the birthplace of Sam Ratulangi, an Indonesian national hero who served as the first governor of Sulawesi; the surrounding highlands give the town markedly cooler temperatures than the coast.
