Tongeren is a city in the Limburg province of Belgium, in the southeastern corner of the Flemish Region, and is described as the oldest town in Belgium, the only Roman administrative capital within the present-day borders of the country. Known in Roman times as Atuatuca Tungrorum, it served as the administrative center of the Civitas Tungrorum, home to the Tungri people. As of 2020 it had a population of 31,142; as of January 1, 2025 Tongeren merged into the new municipality of Tongeren-Borgloon.
