Toyohashi is a core city in southeastern Aichi Prefecture, in the Tokai area of the Chubu region of Japan, and serves as the informal capital of the Higashi-Mikawa region. It had a population of 377,453 as of December 2019 across 261.86 square kilometers. The modern municipality was established as a town in 1879, achieved city status in 1906, and received core city designation in 1999, granting it increased autonomy from the Aichi prefectural government.
