Trabzon is a city on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Turkey and the capital of Trabzon Province. Historically known as Trebizond, it was founded in 756 BC as Trapezous by Greek colonists from Miletus, was absorbed into the Achaemenid Empire by Cyrus the Great, and later belonged to the independent Kingdom of Pontus that challenged Rome until 68 BC. It went on to become part of the Roman and then Byzantine Empire, served as capital of the Empire of Trebizond, a Byzantine successor state after the Fourth Crusade of 1204, and came under Ottoman rule in 1461.
