Trieste is a city and seaport in northeast Italy, capital of the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, with a 2025 population of 198,668 at the head of the Gulf of Trieste near the borders of Slovenia and Croatia. Under Habsburg rule from 1382 to 1918 it grew into the fourth-largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and its chief seaport, and after existing as the separate Free Territory of Trieste from 1947 to 1954 it returned to Italy; it remains a deep-water port linking northern Italy, Germany and Austria to global shipping routes.
