Tripoli, Greece

Tripoli is a city in the central Peloponnese region of Greece, serving as the capital of both the Peloponnese region and the Arcadia regional unit, with a population of 44,165 in the 2021 census. It sits at an elevation of 655 meters in a large basin shaped by karst geology. The city played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence, when Greek insurgents captured it on October 17, 1821 after a bloody siege, and it grew during the 19th and 20th centuries into the administrative, economic and transportation center of the central and southern Peloponnese. Tripoli today hosts the main campus of the University of the Peloponnese and functions as a major transportation hub for the region.
