Tritaea

Southern Europe

Tritaea, or Tritaia, was a polis of Achaea and the most inland of its twelve constituent cities, some 120 stades from Pharae, at a site identified with modern Agia Marina in Achaea, Greece. Pausanias records two rival foundation stories, one crediting Celbidas of Cumae and the other Melanippus, son of Ares and of a priestess of Athena named Triteia. The city helped revive the Achaean League around 280 BCE, was attacked by the Aetolians and Eleans during the Social War of 220 to 217 BCE, and had its territory annexed to Patrae by Augustus after the Battle of Actium; it was also the home of the Olympic victor Agesarchus.
