Tulagi is a small island and town off the south coast of Ngella Sule in Central Province, Solomon Islands, with a population of 1,481 at the 2019 census. It served as the capital of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate from 1896 to 1942, chosen for being isolated and healthier than the larger islands, before Japan occupied it in May 1942 and Allied forces recaptured it that August as part of Operation Watchtower.
