Tura, Hungary

Tura is a town in Pest County in central Hungary, in the Galga Valley between the Great Hungarian Plain and the Matra Hills, first recorded as Thwra in a Latin charter of 1220. One of the largest battles of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 was fought there on July 20, 1849, and after Ottoman rule ended in the late seventeenth century the town prospered through agriculture before becoming a railway town in the early twentieth century. The composer Bela Bartok collected more than 150 folk songs in Tura in 1906, and the town is also known for the Schossberger Castle, designed by architect Miklos Ybl and completed in 1883, and for its distinctive embroidery.
