Turkistan is the administrative center of Turkistan Region in Kazakhstan, near the Syr Darya river, with a population of about 300,000 as of 2023. Its central landmark is the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built over the Sufi poet's tomb by Timur in the 1390s and pictured on Kazakhstan's banknotes until 2006; in 2021 the Organization of Turkic States named the city the Spiritual Capital of the Turkic World.
