Turkmenbashy, previously known as Krasnovodsk and, before that, Kyzyl-Su, is a port city in Balkan Province in western Turkmenistan, on the Turkmenbashy Gulf of the Caspian Sea. It was renamed in 1993 after the honorific title Turkmenbashy, meaning leader of the Turkmens, adopted by Turkmenistan's first president Saparmurat Niyazov. Its population was 91,745 in 2022, and the city is the terminus of the Trans-Caspian Railway and the site of the country's largest oil refining complex.
