Turpan, also known as Turfan, is a prefecture-level city in the east of the Xinjiang autonomous region of China. It covers an area of about 69,759 square kilometers and had a population of 693,988 at the 2020 census. The historical center of the surrounding prefecture has shifted more than once, moving from the ancient city of Yar-Khoto to Qocho before settling at Turpan itself.
