Tursunzoda is a city in western Tajikistan, near the border with Uzbekistan, best known as the home of the TALCO aluminium smelter, the largest aluminium plant in Central Asia and Tajikistan's chief industrial asset. Construction of the plant began in 1972 with its first aluminium poured in 1975, powered by the Nurek hydroelectric station on the Vakhsh River.
