Udine is a city in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy, capital of its province and historical capital of Friuli, between the Adriatic Sea and the Carnic Alps roughly 20 kilometers from Slovenia, with a 2025 population of about 98,320. First recorded in medieval Latin documents around 983 and 1000, it grew into a major trade center after its market was founded in 1223, remained under Venetian rule until 1797, and housed the Italian High Command during the First World War, earning the nickname War Capital.
