Udon Thani is a city in Isan, the northeastern region of Thailand, and serves as the capital of Udon Thani province. Within its municipal boundaries it has a registered population of around 130,500 people, while its wider urban area holds an estimated 400,000 to 430,000 residents, making it the sixth largest city in Thailand. The city functions as a major commercial and administrative hub for northern Isan and is often described as a gateway to Laos, northern Vietnam and southern China.
