Ufa is the capital and largest city of Bashkortostan, Russia, lying at the confluence of the Belaya and Ufa rivers on hills forming the Ufa Plateau west of the southern Ural Mountains. Founded as a Russian fortress in the sixteenth century, Ufa developed into a major industrial center for oil refining and petrochemicals and remains the political and cultural capital of the Bashkir people.
