Újkígyós is a town in Békés County, in the Southern Great Plain region of southeastern Hungary. Despite its name meaning new, the settlement is believed to date back centuries, like its neighbor Szabadkígyós. It expanded greatly after World War II under Communist-era agricultural collectivization, which relocated farming families into its central districts, saw infrastructure improvements from the 1960s onward, and underwent privatization of its collective farms after 1989.
