Usti nad Labem

Usti nad Labem is a city in the northwest of the Czech Republic at the confluence of the Elbe and Bilina rivers, about 65 kilometers north of Prague and 45 kilometers south of Dresden, Germany, and serves as capital of the Usti nad Labem Region as a statutory city. First verifiably mentioned in 1056 or 1057, it was granted royal town status in 1249 and grew as a major industrial center with a chemical industry tradition during the nineteenth century, known in German as Aussig. With about 90,035 inhabitants in 2026 data, the city forms part of the Usti nad Labem-Chomutov agglomeration of roughly 550,000 people alongside Chomutov, Teplice, Most and Decin, and it hosts Jan Evangelista Purkyne University, with about 8,500 students, along with an active Elbe river port and an important railway junction.
