Valletta is the capital city of Malta, between the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour, and at just 0.61 square kilometres it is the European Union's second-smallest capital city. Its 16th-century buildings were built by the Knights Hospitaller and the city is named after Jean Parisot de Valette, who defended Malta against Ottoman invasion.
