Varanasi, also known as Kashi or Benares, is a city on the Ganges river in northern India that holds a central place in Hindu traditions of pilgrimage, death and mourning. Regarded as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, it draws pilgrims to its riverside ghats to bathe in the sacred river and to cremate the dead, and is a major center of learning, temples and classical Indian music and craft.
