Vellore

Vellore is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, on the banks of the Palar River and surrounded by the Javadi Hills, an extension of the Eastern Ghats. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Vellore district and had a population of about 315,000 at the 2011 census. Its documented history reaches back to the 9th century Chola period, and its Vellore Fort and Jalakandeswarar Temple date to the 16th century Vijayanagara Empire; the city was also the site of the 1806 Vellore Mutiny, the first large scale mutiny of Indian soldiers against British rule. Vellore modern economy centers on leather manufacturing, and the region accounts for a large share of India leather exports.
