Vertillum

Western Europe

Vertillum was a Gallic fortified settlement that grew into a substantial Roman-era town, its remains lying in the modern commune of Vertault in the Cote-d'Or department of eastern France. The original Gallic oppidum, enclosed by a stone wall and ditch, covered about 25 hectares, and after Roman conquest the settlement grew into a Gallo-Roman town of three to five thousand people with residential quarters, public baths, temples, and a forum. Its economy specialized in copper-alloy metalworking, and the site was recognized as a Historical Monument in 1875, with many of its artifacts held at the Musee du Pays Chatillonnais.
