Vibo Valentia

Vibo Valentia is a city and comune in the Italian region of Calabria near the Tyrrhenian Sea, capital of the Province of Vibo Valentia. Founded probably in the late seventh century BC as the Greek colony of Hipponion by settlers from Locri, it became the Roman colony of Vibo Valentia in 194 BC, was known as Monteleone before 1861 and Monteleone di Calabria until 1928, and then reverted to its ancient Roman name. Its 2018 population was 33,642, and the city functions as an agricultural, commercial and tourist center, with the resorts of Tropea, Ricadi and Pizzo nearby, a tuna industry at Maierato and a harbor at Vibo Marina.
