Vicksburg, Mississippi

Vicksburg is a city in and the county seat of Warren County, Mississippi, United States, located on a high bluff on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from Louisiana. It was built by French colonists in 1719 and incorporated as Vicksburg in 1825, named for the Methodist missionary Newitt Vick. The population was 21,573 at the 2020 census, estimated at 20,032 in 2024. During the American Civil War, Vicksburg was a key Confederate river port, and its July 1863 surrender to Ulysses S. Grant, coinciding with the Battle of Gettysburg, marked a turning point of the war.
