Villany

Villany is a town in Baranya County, Hungary, whose name derives from the Hungarian word for lightning, villam. Famous for wine, it sits at the center of Hungary's most renowned red wine region. Until the end of the Second World War it was predominantly inhabited by Danube Swabians whose ancestors had arrived around 1720 from the Fulda district; most were expelled between 1945 and 1948 under the Potsdam Agreement and replaced by Hungarians resettled through the Czechoslovak-Hungarian population exchange. According to 2008 data the town had 2,517 residents across 22.02 square kilometers.
