Virovitica is a city in the Slavonia region of Croatia, near the Hungarian border along the Drava river, and serves as the capital of Virovitica-Podravina County, with 19,302 residents in the city proper recorded in the 2021 census. First mentioned in 1234, it was part of the Ottoman Empire from 1552 until the Habsburg conquest of 1684, and during the 1990s it was affected by the Croatian War of Independence, including atrocities committed against civilians. The city sits at an elevation of 122 meters and covers a total area of 170.7 square kilometers.
